Frequently Asked Questions About Shining Rock

Q: Do you charge tuition?

A:  Absolutely not.  Charter schools are publicly-funded schools and do not charge tuition. Our school is open to any student domiciled in the state of North Carolina.

Q: What grades does the school offer?

A: Shining Rock currently has students enrolled in grades K-8 with the goal to grow into a K-12 school in the coming years.

Q:  Do you offer a different curriculum that the traditional public schools in our area?

A. Shining Rock is Haywood County’s first and only public charter school. We offer a small community-school environment, and a rigorous college-preparatory education to students in grades K–8. The school embraces a knowledge-centric curriculum, evidence-based instructional practices, and experiential education driven Field Work as the heart of its teaching and learning experience for all of its students.

Q: Are your teachers certified?

A. All of our teachers are certified or on the certification track.

Q: Do you offer sports?

A. Cross Country, Basketball, and Soccer are offered for boys and girls in grades 5-8.

Q: Do you offer after school clubs?

A. Yes, Shining Rock has student clubs that vary from season to season and are held weekly on Thursday afternoons from 3:30-5:00PM.

Q: Do you offer after-school care?

A. Yes, the WINGS program is open to students in grades K-5, five days a week from 3:30-5:30PM.  Students in grades 6-8 may access community based after school care for middle school at Longs Chapel UMC and First UMC.  Shining Rock provides bus transportation to those community partners.

Q: What are the hours of the school day?

A: Our school hours are from 8:00 a.m. until 3:10 p.m.

Q: Why do you wear uniforms and where can I find more information about them?

A: It is our belief that uniforms level the playing field for all students, reducing the stress of peer pressure and keeping the focus on academics.  Uniform assistance is available, based on need.  You can find information about uniforms on the school website.

Q: Do you provide lunch for purchase?

A: Yes. Lunches are available for purchase 5 days a week.  Assistance is available for those in need. Many if not most students pack their lunches.

Q:  Do you provide transportation services?

A:  Yes.  We offer common pick up and drop off pick up points in Balsam, Waynesville, Clyde and Canton each morning and afternoon.
